MFA needed for your u-account for new office365 server and osiris

see MFA below.

during 2021 the u-accounts will be replaced by a new Radboud University account

In 2021 everyone will get a new Radboud University account to be able to work with Microsoft's applications in the cloud. This will replace the current accounts (U, E or S numbers). In addition, everyone will also get a new e-mail address that looks the same as the new account: firstname.lastname@ru.nl.

You will get the opportunity to approve your proposed new account name and e-mail address.

Overview of what will change with the new digital identity:

  • A new Radboud University account: your account name will be firsname.lastname@ru.nl.
  • A new e-mail address: your e-mail address will be firstname.lastname@ru.nl.
  • If the account name/email address is already occupied, a number will be added: firstname.lastname[number]@ru.nl
  • The current accounts (U, S, E and Z numbers) will be transferred to the new account. Eventually, you will no longer log in with your number, but with your new account name.
  • From now on, the new account name will be both your user name with which you log in, and your new e-mail address.

MFA

What is MFA?
MFA stands for Multi Factor Authentication. This means that you log in with something you know (your username and password) and something you have (an app on your smartphone for example). You can compare this with the login methods banks use for online banking.

Why MFA?
We use more and more services with sensitive data, for example HR, grade entry systems, student information systems, applications with sensitive research data or privacy-sensitive information. These services increasingly require stronger forms of login than what you know as a user: just username and password. After verifying username and password, you confirm your identity with an additional step: the second factor (something you have). This can be done via SMS, a smartphone app or a so-called token. Only then are you logged in. Thus, the information is extra secure.

MFA for Microsoft 365
With the introduction of Microsoft 365, you need MFA to log in to Microsoft 365 applications. For more information, see Multi Factor Authentication for MFA. It's also possible to use a non-Microsoft authenticator as a second factor for Microsoft 365.

MFA for teachers
Teachers use MFA to digitally sign grades in Osiris. You can read more about this at: Electronically Signing in Osiris (Dutch).

Used for which services?

See Accounts.

Change password

If you want to reset or change your password, you can do this at https://account.ru.nl/PasswordReset/ or at https://account.ru.nl/passwordchange.

For the U-account you are asked to change the password every year, otherwise, your account will be blocked.

For the U-account it is important that you replace the RU password on a mobile device, often stored on the device to avoid having to log in every time, with the new password. Otherwise, an app that often polls your account for new items may cause your account to become blocked if it does that too often with a wrong password.
