Installing a printer

We have two types of printers :

• Department printers: print using cncz samba server
• Peage printers: print using peage server

Installing a Peage printer (Konica-Minolta)

"follow-me" printing : indirect printing, send job to peage printer server and on printer retreive job from server

To print on the Konica-Minolta printers you have the use the central Peage printing system. The flow of printing using Peage is a little bit different. For all Konica-Minolta printers you only have to install a single printer on your system payprint03.ru.nl ( for Faculty employees, students use payprint01). You send print job to this generic print queue (using your u-account credentials, not your peage pincode). Then you walk to your Konica-Minolta printer of choice and you login using your u-account name and a Peage pincode. At that moment you can select one of your jobs sent to the generic print queue and press the blue start button on the printer to start printing the selected job.

Instead of printing to a generic print queue you can also print to a printer's specific printer queue. In this case you don't need to login to the printer to print the jobs, because the printer will instead directly the print jobs you send to its queue. Below is explained how this "direct mode" can be configured.

Currently it is not possible to view the print queue remotely on your own computer; you can only see your print jobs on the interface of the Konica-Minolta printers. Also it is not possible to send a color job to the printer, and then at the printer select to print it as black&white instead. However C&CZ did a request for above mentioned features, so hopefully it will implemented soon.

In the huygens building there is also a printer on the ground floor where you can authenticate using your employee pass. However this is not implemented at all printers because it didn't work for employees having multiple contracts.

installing generic Peage printer (follow-me printing) and setup pin code

Notes:

• there are three generic follow-me printers for different groups of users
  • 'RU Print' for students
  • 'RU Print 02' for Radboud Services staff
  • 'RU Print 03' for faculty staff <================== USE THIS

• mac/linux users must use printer url: smb://payprint03.ru.nl/RU-Print03 (and not smb://payprint01.ru.nl/RU-print which is for students)
• linux users can see instructions here

Important: the credentials on operating system to authenticate to peage when printing is your u-account (eg. u123456) used as follows:

• user: ru\u123456
  DON'T forget to put 'ru\' before your u-account name!
• password: <u-account password>

Note! It is best to set black and white and double-sided as the default and select colour and/or one-sided printing each time you need it. Reason: colour prints are much more expensive and should only be done when really needed. For windows the default is already black and white.

linux Peage setup details

• for linux use as driver the specific ppd file for the printer.
  A set of good preconfigured ppd files, which specify correctly the installed devices on the printers, for the konica minolta printers can be found at cncz printers page or just in the table below :

• Important: for the konica minolta color printers you can set them to grayscale in the configuration by

    right-click printer -> in popup menu select "properties" 
    then select "Printer Options" form
    in which you set
         Select Color: grayscale            => this option is only available if you installed the driver from the ppd file => it is not available if you choose generic postscript driver

"direct printing" on specified printer : via peage printer server direct to specific printer

Instead of sending the print jobs the generic RU-Print peage queue you can also send a job to specific printer queue. The installation is similar as for follow-me printing but instead of the follow-me printing name "RU-Print03" we use the specific printer name. So follow the instructions for follow-me printing at http://www.ru.nl/fb/english/print/instructions/printing/ but instead of "RU-Print03" use one of the specific printer names below:

Then the jobs will come directly out of the specific printer specified.

Installing department printer

The preferred way to install a printer is to use authenticated printing with the smb protocol to the samba server of C&CZ.

Note: direct printing to printer with jetdirect protocol without authentication only works for machines on the local network and thus not for laptops connected to the eduroam network. Samba printing works on all networks because C&CZ allows it for all networks within the university because it uses authentication via the smb protocol.

IMPORTANT: for authenticated printing with the smb protocol your account needs to be in a the pr-icis unix group. You can check this in the http://dhz.science.ru.nl website under the subpage groups. If you are not member of a the pr-icis unix group then the scientific programmer of your section can add you to it.

Technical details  :

• uses central printer server to send jobs to printer:
  • Windows: \\printto.science.ru.nl\printername or \\printer-srv.science.ru.nl\printername (both seem to work under Windows 7 as of 2014-08-19)
    • if having authentication problems with the server you can manually authenticate:
      • for windows 7 : \\printto.science.ru.nl\printtest
      • for windows 8 : \\printsmb.science.ru.nl\printtest
  • Linux, Mac: smb://printsmb/printername (Reason for alternative server: bug in smb software used by Linux,Mac)
    IMPORTANT: don't use smb://printsmb.science.ru.nl/printername because that can fail due to a bug in Samba. If you use the wireless network eduroam, add the line "131.174.30.59 printsmb" to your /etc/hosts file.
• authentication needed with science account
• IMPORTANT: when using eduroam make sure it uses this university credentials, otherwise you are seen as a guest on the network and disallowed to access the printers over the smb protocol!!
• works on all local networks (including wireless networks)
