Cncz has a page about configuring email at : http://wiki.science.ru.nl/cncz/Categorie:Email?setlang=en.

Below follows a technical summary.

The mail server is : post.science.ru.nl. You can access it in two ways using either  IMAP or the POP protocol. IMAP is a newer protocol and it is preferred above the POP protocol. The settings for both protocols are :

For IMAP users :

  1. mail me when you're switch and than I will ask C&CZ to deliver your new mail to the new email server
  2. when cncz has changed this, I'll notify you by phone
  3. make in your email program a new account (keep your old imap account) with the following settings
    • imap protocol
    • mailserver: post.science.ru.nl
    • turn on SSL security (imap than uses port993 )
  4. make new folders under your Inbox folder, and move the mail from your old imap server account to these new folders using drag and drop. Sorry you have to do this manually, C&CZ doesn't any service for this.

Remark: mail on the new imap server will be stored on the server and not on your home directory so as it used to be. The only access you'll have to stored imap mail is through the imap protocol.

For POP users :

  1. mail me when you want to make the switch and than I will ask C&CZ to deliver your new mail to the new email server
  2. when cncz has changed this, I'll notify you by phone
  3. fetch all email from the old server
  4. change the settings from you're account to the following :
    • pop protocol
    • mailserver: post.science.ru.nl
    • turn on SSL security (POP than uses port 995 )

For both POP and IMAP users change your smtp server settings to the new authenticated SMTP server :

  • read instructions at http://wiki.science.ru.nl/cncz/Email_authsmtp
  • in short :
    • SMTP-server : smtp.science.ru.nl>
    • Turn TLS on! Authentication is only allowed if TLS is used. Sometimes this is called STARTTLS (Eudora) or SSL (Outlook, Pine).
    • port : 25

Remarks :

  • IMAP and POP both use SSL, but SMTP uses TSL!
  • With IMAP and POP you cannot turn SSL off!
  • With SMTP you can turn TLS off  and it then still works on port 25. However when TLS is turned of authentication is disabled and you will be disallowed to connect to the SMTP server when you are outside the university network. SMTP can use TLS or not!
  • For SMTP I advice to always keep TSL turned on.
